Physical Therapy in Huntington
Heart attacks, heart surgeries, heart failures, and angioplasty can cause the heart, and overall levels of cardiovascular health, to weaken. A weak heart can leave you more susceptible to a heart attack in the near future. Cardiac rehab helps strengthen the health of your heart and helps to prevent a next heart attack using a four-phase rehabilitation procedure.
In Phase One, a physical therapist is brought into the hospital to gauge the levels of your heart health. This is done while performing basic mobility exercises. After the physical therapist has an idea of what should be done, he/she will instruct you on proper exercises to perform at home and give you a cane/walker, should you need one.
In Phase Two, your cardiac rehab will continue outside of the hospital, at the office of your physical therapist. Island Sports Physical Therapy has six locations on Long Island including East Northport, Coram, Huntington, Nesconset, East Meadow, and Glen Cove. In this phase, you will be taught more exercises and healthier lifestyle choices that will raise the levels of your heart health. The duration and intensity of these exercises will vary depending on the results of your initial assessment. Monitoring your heart health will also be taught during this phase.
Phase Three increases a number of exercises performed while increasing the intensity. Your physical therapist might prescribe additional types of exercises.
By Phase Four, your cardiac rehab is in your hands. The exercises continue however, you can perform them home unless you choose to remain at the physical therapist’s office.
In addition to better heart health and reduced chance of another heart attack, cardiac rehab can:
- Help you lose weight
- Improve your diet
- Improve your quality of life
