Physical Therapy in Glen Cove For Common Head Injuries:

A head injury can impact the scalp, skull, brain or relevant blood vessels. Most head injuries are classified on a scale of mild to serious. A mild head injury would be something like a simple bump on the head, while a serious head injury would be something more like a concussion. In children, most head injuries are considered mild and do not injure the brain. There are two types of head injuries, external and internal. External head injuries are classified as only involving the scalp while internal head injuries will involve the brain, skull or blood vessels. Among the most common head injuries suffered by children are:

  • Concussion
  • Contusion
  • Skull Fracture
  • Bleeding

What You Can Do To Help:

It is important to get medical help for your child in the case of any head injury. If you are unsure of the severity of the injury, here are a few indicators that may indicate your child has suffered from a more serious head injury:

  • Swollen Scalp
  • Headache
  • Losing consciousness
  • Vomiting

For those head injuries that aren’t as severe, there are some things you can do to help your child that has just hit their head. Below are some suggestions of what you can do at home to help your child through a mild head injury:

  • Use an ice pack in the affected area for about 20 minutes every 3 to 4 hours.
  • Make sure to keep an eye on your child for the next 24 hours for any abnormal or changing behavior.
  • If your child falls asleep, be sure to check on them a few times during the night.
