Summer is here! Time to break out your summer shoes, but did you know your summer shoes could be the cause of your back pain? The shoes we wear have a direct impact on our bodies, especially our backs. Studies have found that the shoes we wear have a direct correlation with our lower back pain. At Island Sports Physical Therapy in Locust Valley, we worked hard to find the root of your pain and begin your rehabilitation treatment.
Shoes to Avoid
Your body does not appreciate the shoes you wear that offer no support, change your walking posture, ultimately cause tightness in certain tendons, and put you at a higher risk of injuring yourself. If you have unknown underlying issues such as fallen arches, flat feet, or more these shoes will make those problems even worse. Below is a list of some of the shoes that are bad for your back and body:
- High Heels: will put all your weight on the balls of your feet, adds pressure on bones and joints, can cause bunions, ingrown toenails, and more
- Weight loss/toning shoes: change your walking posture, mimics walking on unstable surfaces which leads to strain in the Achilles tendons
- Flats: are similar to heels where they give no support to your feet, can lead to fallen arches, can cause overstretching or tearing of tendons
- Flip flops: force you to crunch and cling with your toes, has no strap which can lead to sprains and falls, nos stability or cushioning to soles of feet or toes
Prevention Tips
Instead of getting rid of your favorite stylish shoes, try these tips to prevent any injury caused by your shoes.
- use insoles that will provide support
- wear heels less often, try wearing shorter heels,
- make sure shoes are correct; not too big where your foot will slide and not too small where your foot can’t breathe
- buy regular trainers, not special weight loss/toning shoes
- look for flip flops with a sturdier sole, and don’t wear them when walking long distances
- buy new flip flops more often since they get worn out so easily
You can continue to wear the shoes you love if you follow these tips. Taking care of your body is crucial and will help to prevent injury and back problems in the future.
