What Causes A Sprained Ankle?

Sprained ankles are often caused by the foot suddenly rolling the ankle joint out of its normal position, often sustained during physical activity. They are especially common for athletes, particularly in sports related to running, like soccer. Ankle sprains can cause a lot of discomfort and swelling in the area, and cause damage to the blood vessels, tendons, and cartilage. While twisting an ankle is quite common, it is important to know the symptoms of a sprained ankle, and to know the difference.

Among the symptoms of a sprained ankle are:

  • Pain, especially when you put weight on the ankle
  • Tenderness when you touch the ankle
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Limited range of motion
  • Instability
  • “Popping” sensation or sound at the time of injury

If you have noticed any of these symptoms, you might have suffered some type of sprained ankle. There are two different types of sprained ankles, depending on how the injury was sustained. If your foot went inward, then this has stretched the outside ligaments too far, causing pain on the outside of your ankle. This is called an “inversion ankle sprain”. The opposite, an “eversion ankle sprain”, occurs when you twist your foot outward, which will cause pain on your inside ligaments. Luckily, at Island Sports Physical Therapy, a physical therapist in Suffolk County can help treat your ankle sprain.
