Physical Therapist on Long IslandChronic pain can significantly impact your quality of life, especially during seasons when the temperature rises. At Island Sports Physical Therapy, our Physical Therapist on Long Island understand individuals’ challenges when trying to enjoy the summer while dealing with persistent pain. Continue reading for valuable tips and strategies to help you alleviate discomfort and make the most of the sunny season.

The Impact of Summer on Chronic Pain

The summer can bring relief and new challenges for individuals with chronic pain. The warm weather and increased sunlight can enhance mood and promote physical activity, which are beneficial for pain management. However, factors such as high humidity, changes in routine, and increased social engagements can also exacerbate symptoms and make it harder to cope.

Tips for Managing Chronic Pain During the Summer

  • Stay Hydrated – Proper hydration is crucial for overall health and can significantly impact pain levels. During the summer, it’s essential to drink adequate water to prevent dehydration, which can exacerbate pain symptoms.
  • Prioritize Rest and Relaxation – While summer often brings a flurry of activities, it’s essential to prioritize rest and relaxation to manage chronic pain effectively. Set aside time each day for self-care activities that promote relaxation, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or gentle stretching. Incorporating these mindful practices into your routine can help reduce stress levels and alleviate pain symptoms.
  • Manage Temperature Sensitivity – Chronic pain patients often experience heightened sensitivity to temperature changes. During the summer, extreme heat or cold air conditioning can worsen pain symptoms. Ensure your living environment remains at a comfortable temperature by using fans, air conditioning, or heating devices as needed. Consider wearing lightweight, breathable clothing to regulate body temperature effectively.
  • Seek Professional Help – If chronic pain overwhelms your daily life, don’t hesitate to seek Island Sports Physical Therapy. Consult with our physical therapist who specializes in pain management. Exercises to Do At Home: Physical Therapy in Cold Spring Harbor

To promote a better overall healthy lifestyle, follow these simple exercises for PT at home by Physical Therapy in Cold Spring Harbor.

Hamstring Stretch

First, lie on your back, raise your left leg, and clasp your hands around the back of your thigh. Pull your knee close to your chest while slowly straightening your knee. You should feel a stretch on the back of your left thigh. Don’t worry about getting your leg fully straight if you feel a good stretch. Hold the position for about 30 seconds, then repeat it on the opposite leg.

Piriformis Stretch

Start this stretch by lying on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on a flat surface. Take your right ankle, and thenlift it up and cross it over your left knee. You then clasp your hands around your left thigh and pull it towards your chest. You should feel this stretch around the right buttock, hip, and back of the thigh. Hold for this position for about 30 seconds, then repeat on the opposite leg.

Standing Hip Flexor

Stand up facing a bench or chair with both your feet pointing forwards. Put your left foot on the bench with your foot planted past your knee. Slowly shift your weight forwards towards the bench. You should feel some stretch on the front of the right hip, maybe some in your right calf. Hold this position for about 30 seconds, and continue torepeat it on the opposite leg.

Thoracic Extension

Either stand or sit up straight on a chair with your hands behind your head. Extend your upper back squeezing the shoulder blades down and back. Hold for a second or two, and then return to the starting position. Complete about 10 repetitions at a time.

Lumbar Extension

Start by standing straight and place your hands on your lower back. Slowly bend backward as far as you can. Focus on arching your lower back, and hold for a second or two. You can then return to the starting position and repeat the stretch about 10 times.

Cervical Retraction

Start the exercise in a seated position with your shoulders being pulled back and down. Look straight forward and tuck your chin in. Try to hold this position for a couple seconds, then try to bring your chin straight back without moving your head downwards. Return to the starting position and repeat numerous times.

Benefits of Physical Therapy

Physical Therapist on Long Island works to help you move and feel better. It is one of the best options for long-term pain. If your doctor recommends physical therapy, you will most likely need to go to multiple visits. Some of the exercises you will perform include:

  • Low-impact Aerobic Training– These workouts rev up your heart rate but won’t be too hard on your joints. Before doing strength exercises, they may have you warming up on a bike or walking on a treadmill.
  • Strengthening Exercises– Physical Therapists may have you use machines in their offices, resistance bands, or your body weight.
  • Pain Relief Exercises– These exercises target areas of pain, so you’re more strong and more flexible.
  • Stretching– This will warm up your joints and muscles, and your therapist will make sure you don’t stretch too far.
  • Heat and Ice Packs– Ice will reduce inflammation, and heat will warm up your muscles so you can move better.
  • Massage– Your therapist will massage the area of your body that is in pain but will ensure it’s safe and helpful for you.
  • TENS and Ultrasound– Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or TENS, uses a device to send a small electric current to the area of the skin where you have pain. Ultrasound sends sound waves to the areas that hurt.
