First, lie on your back, raise your left leg, and clasp your hands around the back of your thigh. Pull your knee close to your chest while slowly straightening your knee. You should feel a stretch on the back of your left thigh. Don’t worry about getting your leg fully straight if you feel a good stretch. Hold the position for about 30 seconds, then repeat it on the opposite leg.

Piriformis Stretch

Start this stretch by lying on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on a flat surface. Take your right ankle, and thenlift it up and cross it over your left knee. You then clasp your hands around your left thigh and pull it towards your chest. You should feel this stretch around the right buttock, hip, and back of the thigh. Hold for this position for about 30 seconds, then repeat on the opposite leg.

Standing Hip Flexor

Stand up facing a bench or chair with both your feet pointing forwards. Put your left foot on the bench with your foot planted past your knee. Slowly shift your weight forwards towards the bench. You should feel some stretch on the front of the right hip, maybe some in your right calf. Hold this position for about 30 seconds, and continue torepeat it on the opposite leg.

Thoracic Extension

Either stand or sit up straight on a chair with your hands behind your head. Extend your upper back squeezing the shoulder blades down and back. Hold for a second or two, and then return to the starting position. Complete about 10 repetitions at a time.

Lumbar Extension

Start by standing straight and place your hands on your lower back. Slowly bend backward as far as you can. Focus on arching your lower back, and hold for a second or two. You can then return to the starting position and repeat the stretch about 10 times.

Cervical Retraction

Start the exercise in a seated position with your shoulders being pulled back and down. Look straight forward and tuck your chin in. How Does Physical Therapy Help After A Stroke?

After having a stroke, many people are left with disabilities that can be devastating to the patient; so you should call Physical Therapy in Cold Spring Harbor. It affects how they originally lived their lives from a day to day basis and it can leave them with less motor function than they had beforehand. Having a stroke is a very traumatic experience and different patients lose different functions. Luckily, patients can seek out Physical Therapy in Cold Spring Harbor to help regain the motor functions they lost in addition to strengthening themselves enough to be able to go back to their daily activities.

Physical Therapy in Cold Spring Harbor

After a stroke, one of the main aspects of the rehabilitation process is going to physical therapy to rebuild a person’s strength. Depending on what was the most affected by the stroke, a person may be recommended to a specific type of physical therapy in Cold Spring Harbor.

  • Physical therapy in Cold Spring Harbor is meant to teach patients how to do simple motor tasks again. This would include activities such as standing, sitting, lying down, walking, and/or switching between movements.
  • Speech therapy is meant to help reteach how to speak and understand the formation of sentences. A patient may have no issues with thinking and understanding, but their issue is that they don’t know how to form sentences anymore. Speech therapy will help regain most, if not all of their original language understanding again.
  • Occupational therapy will help patients to perform daily activities. This could refer to swallowing, dressing, reading and writing to help the patient become as independent as possible. In addition, occupational therapy involves exercise and training that can be transferred over in the future.

Expectations

When it comes to going to physical therapy after a stroke, there are a few expectations someone should have before going into it.

  • Rehabilitation will start when your doctor gives you the approval to start. In order for this to happen, your condition must stabilize enough to be able to begin by controlling life threatening conditions, limiting any stroke related complications, and preventing another stroke from happening. The duration of your rehabilitation process will depend on how bad the initial stroke was and how severe your complications are. There is no set amount of time that physical therapy will take since it is different for every person.
  • At physical therapy in Cold Spring Harbor, there will be motor skill exercises to help improve your coordination and muscle strength. In addition, there may be constraint therapy which is when you practice trying to move the limb that has limited movement due to the stroke and practice your range of motion movement.
  • A physical therapist may utilize a technology based therapy where they use electricity on a muscle to get it to contract and essentially reteach it how to move properly. The weakened muscles that are affected will be the ones receiving it and it will help to strengthen them enough to continue with physical therapy.
  • Cognitive therapy will help to reteach your brain to perform certain understanding functions such as forming sentences or reading and writing. This is primarily focused on someone’s communications efforts and helping them regain them and strengthen them hopefully to how they were initially.

A physical therapist may use one or a combination of different methods to help get a patient back to how they were before the stroke, however it will vary depending on the person and their condition. If you or someone you know is recovering from a stroke, have your doctor refer you to physical therapy in Smithtown and visit our website for more information.

Tips For Preventing Injuries This Spring/Summer

Spring and summer are perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and swimming. However, these activities also increase the risk of injuries due to the high intensity and duration of physical activity. At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we have seen our fair share of injuries caused by outdoor activities during these seasons. That is why we have put together some tips to help prevent injuries and allow you to enjoy your outdoor activities fully. Continue reading to learn more!

Tips For Preventing Injuries This Spring/Summer

  • Start Slowly – When starting any new physical activity, it is essential to start slowly and gradually build up your intensity and duration. Doing too much intense activity too soon can cause injuries such as muscle strains and sprains. Begin with shorter and less intense workouts and gradually increase the intensity and duration. It is also essential to warm up before starting any activity to prepare your body for the physical demands that lie ahead.
  • Wear the Right Gear – Wearing the right gear is crucial for preventing injuries during outdoor activities. For example, proper shoes with good support and grip can prevent ankle and foot injuries. Similarly, wearing a helmet while biking or skateboarding can protect your head from severe injuries in case of a fall. Make sure to choose appropriate gear for your activity that fits you well.
  • Listen to Your Body – One of the most important things you can do to prevent injuries is to listen to your body. If you feel pain or discomfort during an activity, it is essential to stop and rest. Ignoring pain or pushing through it can lead to more severe injuries that may require medical attention. Resting and allowing your body to recover can prevent further damage and help you return to your activity sooner.
